Innovation award bestowed to Hengst

Filter expert distinguished for “Blue-on”, a resource-conserving alternative to screw-on oil filters

02/27/2018, Münster/Düsseldorf: Münster filter specialist Hengst has been granted an honor of particular distinction: Yesterday, “Blue-on”, a product that the company developed as a sustainable alternative to spin-on oil filters was recognized with the “North Rhine-Westphalia Innovation Award” in Düsseldorf. This award carries a cash prize of EUR 100,000.

The idea behind Blue.on was to develop a sustainable oil filter concept that can be applied to the conventional screw-on filter interface. At present, the world’s roads are populated by approximately 800 million vehicles that are equipped with screw-on oil filters. These filters require that the entire filter unit be replaced during an oil change and involve the undesirable need to dispose of the remaining oil as hazardous waste. This necessity puts an enormous strain on the environment as it causes waste volumes in the realm of 500,000 t of steel (50 Eiffel Towers) and 142,000 t of waste oil (one Suezmax tanker).

The award is the state's foremost decoration and honors research achievements that are both exceptional and of particular relevance to society and applications in the real world. The award is conferred on individuals and companies who promote progress in North Rhine-Westphalia by sharing their understanding of social contexts and solution to problems of practical relevance.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, the state's Minister for Economic Affairs and Digitization, who conceived this award in 2008 and presented it together with Armin Laschet, the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasized: “The Hengst corporation with their engineering team headed by Michael Böhm virtually re-invented the classic screw-on oil filter. This impressive feat of engineering illustrates not only the innovation prowess of Hengst SE from Münster but also exemplifies just how much pioneering spirit the family businesses in our state possess.”
