Dust collectors for clean air in industry

Clean air is crucial for efficient and sustainable industrial processes. With dust extraction solutions from Hengst, you can create optimum working conditions, protect your systems and increase productivity. Our high-performance systems meet the highest requirements - flexibly, reliably and individually adaptable. Put your trust in our experience and set new standards in industrial air pollution control.

H-Class certification

Our dust collectors with H-class certification meet the highest health protection requirements. They are designed for the filtration of dusts with a workplace limit value below 0.1 mg/m³ and are therefore ideal for handling carcinogenic or pathogenic substances. In some cases, certification for dust class H enables energy-saving recirculated air operation.

M-Class certification

Dust collectors with M-class certification offer reliable protection for medium-hazard dusts. They capture hazardous dusts with a workplace limit value above 0.1 mg/m³ and are therefore the right choice for numerous industrial applications. Our M-class dust collectors combine effective filter performance with a robust design and help to efficiently meet legal requirements for occupational health and safety.

Explosion protection

Explosive dusts can occur in many industrial processes. Our explosion-proof dust collectors are specially developed for such areas. Our portfolio includes both pressure-shock-resistant and relieved versions that can withstand a dust explosion, as well as devices that prevent explosions from occurring in the first place by preventing ignition sparks. They offer maximum safety when handling combustible dusts and actively contribute to explosion protection. In this way, we ensure maximum operational safety even in sensitive production environments.

Benefits

Over 100 years of experience

Our systems are based on over 100 years of experience in the field of industrial air purification. This deep-rooted know-how forms the basis for sophisticated, durable and high-performance dust extraction solutions.

100% proprietary filter media and systems

Hengst is one of the few manufacturers of extraction systems that develops and manufactures both filter systems and filter media in-house. Our roots in the automotive industry enable a highly efficient, cost-optimized production network - a real competitive advantage in Industrial applications.

Filter media from our own production

By manufacturing not only the filter technology but also the filters themselves in-house, we ensure maximum availability, short delivery times and attractive spare parts prices. Technology and media are optimally matched - for maximum efficiency and durability.

Our products for clean air

Our dust extraction systems are always tailored precisely to the respective requirements. We do not shy away from special challenges. This also enables solutions for applications where other suppliers cannot offer suitable technology.

Common applications for dust collectors in industry

In numerous industrial applications - from metalworking to the wood and construction industries to food production - health and safety-relevant dusts are generated. Effective extraction is essential here. Hengst offers suitable solutions for all these applications. Here are some typical examples:

Food dusts

Food production usually generates organic dusts, which can form explosive dust-air mixtures. Safe operation can often be ensured by avoiding ignition sources in the dust extraction system. In many cases, the separated dusts can be recovered for further processing.

From explosive to harmful: the dangers of dust in industrial processes

Whether in metal processing, food production or general industry - dust is far more than just a by-product. Depending on its composition, it can be harmful to health, carcinogenic or even explosive. Professional dust extraction solutions are therefore crucial for occupational safety and plant protection.

Explosion hazard due to dust

Many dusts are combustible. When swirled with air and in contact with an ignition source, an explosive mixture is created - especially with fine particles. Critical are e.g:

  • Metal dusts such as aluminum or magnesium
  • Food dusts such as flour, sugar or starch
  • Particle sizes 500 µm
  • Dust concentration >15 g/m³

The exact framework conditions must be known when designing EN dust extraction systems, then safe operation is possible.

Dust class M and H - requirements for dust collectors

Industrial dusts are divided into dust classes in order to select suitable filter technology:

  • Dust class M: For harmful dusts of medium hazard (e.g. mineral dusts, wood). Class M dusts have an occupational exposure limit value (OEL) of more than 0.1 mg/m³. A separation efficiency of at least 99.9 % is required.
  • Dust class H: For highly hazardous and sometimes carcinogenic dusts (e.g. asbestos, lead, mold). As the OEL for this dust class is less than 0.1 mg/m³, the requirements for extraction systems are also higher. Dust collectors in dust class H filter 99.995 percent of the dust out of the air.

Frequently asked questions about industrial dust collectors

When is there a risk of explosion from dust?

There is a risk of explosion if combustible dust is mixed with air in sufficient concentration and an ignition source is added. The German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) states as a rule of thumb that dusts with a particle size of 500 µm are generally explosive. In terms of concentration, the lower explosion limit (LEL) of dust/air mixtures is generally >15 g/m³. Possible ignition sources are hot surfaces, sparks, electrical discharges or mechanical friction. Special dust collectors with the appropriate approval are therefore required in zones classified as "potentially explosive" (e.g. explosion protection zone 22 for areas with only occasional occurrence of explosive dust atmospheres). Due to the automatic cleaning process of the filter media, the dust extraction system itself sometimes also causes the LEL to be exceeded.

What role do occupational exposure limit values (OELs) from the BG, DGUV and bafa play?

Occupational exposure limit values (OELs) specify how high the concentration of a substance in the breathing air may be on average over an 8-hour working day without endangering the health of employees. They are given in mg/m³ and vary depending on the type of dust. Details can be obtained directly from Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Dust collectors are used to reliably fall below these values. Compliance with the AGW is legally binding in Germany in accordance with TRGS 900 and forms the basis of every risk assessment under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
