The defossilization of the transport sector is leading to a growing variety of renewable fuels (biofuels such as FAME, synthetic e-fuels, HVO). These pose chemical challenges for filtration technology, which we analyze in detail in our white paper.
Core contents of the white paper:
- The problem of fuel ageing: Biofuels (biodiesel) have a high ageing potential that is heavily dependent on temperature and storage conditions. Fatty acid methyl ester compounds (FAME) are particularly critical.
- The role of the acid number: Aggressive acids are formed during ageing. While an increase in the acid number to the standard permissible value of 0.5 mg KOH/g can already lead to strength losses of up to 45% with standard media, critical qualities (e.g. in Brazil or Asia) generate acid numbers of over 1.0 mg KOH/g. This can lead to swelling Gaskets and damaged Filter Elements.
- Special test methods: Hengst has developed its own ageing equipment in which fuels are artificially pre-aged (e.g. by introducing air at 95°C). This is how we ensure the resistance of housings, gaskets and media to oxidation products.
- Superior dust holding capacity: By using innovative filter media, we have been able to triple the dust holding capacity of some of our competitors - to around 180 g/dm³.
