Three large companies based in Münster are taking the heat transition very specifically into their own hands: Hengst Filtration, the Provinzial Group and the Sparkassenverband Westfalen-Lippe have concluded an agreement with Stadtwerke Münster for the supply of district heating. The companies are thus taking an important step towards the sustainable development of their properties and at the same time providing an impetus for the expansion of infrastructure in the Nienkamp industrial estate.
By connecting to Münster's district heating system, Hengst, Sparkassenverband and Provinzial are creating the basis for a climate-neutral heat supply for their own offices and production facilities in the future. The municipal utilities will supply a total of 6 MW of heat to the north of Münster from the end of 2028. With their decision, the three companies are also ensuring that the Nienkamp industrial estate and the Sparkasse campus in Münster-Kinderhaus will be connected to district heating lines for the first time. Other neighboring companies that want to make their heat supply climate-neutral in the future can also benefit from the joint initiative.
Stadtwerke's strategy for renewable district heating was convincing. Professor Dr. Liane Buchholz, President of the Savings Banks Association: "Sustainable, locally generated heat promotes much more than just local climate protection; it makes us independent of imported fuels and volatile energy markets. In this respect, it was also a strategic decision for us."
As a family business, we take responsibility for the careful use of resources. For us at Hengst Filtration, switching to locally generated and climate-neutral heat is an absolute must.

Provinzial CEO Dr. Wolfgang Breuer adds: "The heating transition is not a purely technical project - it contributes to the common good and to a sustainable quality of life for everyone in our region. That's why we're not waiting, but moving forward together."
Stadtwerke Münster is gradually converting its district heating to local renewable heat sources such as deep geothermal energy and solar thermal energy as well as large heat pumps that generate energy from waste heat, wastewater and flowing water by 2045. Sebastian Jurczyk, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Münster: "This initiative is an excellent example of how the infrastructure for the heat transition can be developed in a targeted manner. The fact that three companies with high heating requirements have joined forces means that the new development of the industrial estates with district heating pays off for all sides. Heat transition works best together."
Before the first kilowatt hours of district heating can flow into the Nienkamp industrial estate and the campus, planning for the construction of the new district heating pipelines is now underway at Hafenplatz. Construction work is scheduled to start in 2026. After around two years of construction, district heating is set to flow through new pipelines in the north of Münster.
